Academic Written English Scholarly Writing non-credit: One section of the class will meet 5: Tuesdays and Thursdays in Matherly Hall. A second section of the class will meet 5: Mondays and Wednesdays in Matherly Hall. The last day to register or drop the class will be Thursday, September 6th, A Fall B section of the class if enrollment allows will be offered October 15 through November 29th, with no classes held Thanksgiving week.

Scholarly Writing formerly EAP and EAP is designed for international graduate students who wish to improve their written academic English skills.

It teaches students to identify different writing styles through text analysis. It also addresses common grammatical issues such as tense, article, and preposition usage.

These aims are achieved through direct instruction, group work, practices, and individual writing times. The Scholarly Writing course is offered as a non-credit class lasting six weeks.

This class is not eligible for a tuition waiver and is not offered as a distance education class.

ASW is a hybrid course meaning students will be required to participate in the class online and meet with the instructor in person these meetings will be set up individually.

This course is designed for international graduate students who have previously completed Scholarly Writing and wish to further develop their writing skills. Building on the principles of academic written English presented in Scholarly Writing, this course will look specifically at dissertation, thesis, journal article, and grant proposal writing.

The course will address each section of a typical graduate writing assignment including the introduction, methods, results, and discussion. Students will analyze texts from their fields and learn to apply successful techniques to their own writing.

These aims will be achieved through a hybrid approach utilizing an online classroom and individual writing conferences. This class is not eligible for a tuition waiver.

About the AWE Program Academic Written English, which began in Augustwas instituted to meet the academic writing needs of regularly enrolled graduate students who need help with writing in English.

In Summer university-wide budget cuts and policy changes led to significant restructuring of the program and its offerings. This course, Scholarly Writing, meets for two six-week sessions.

Effective immediately, the new policy requires individual academic units to determine acceptable writing skills, using a holistic evaluation. They will be responsible for creating a plan for student success in academic writing, which may include a requirement to take a course in Academic Written English.

Students must still meet the UF required minimums on the admission tests or else be admitted conditionally. In cases where applicants are admitted but lack sufficient writing skills to maximize their education, the graduate coordinator must ensure that sufficient opportunities are available for the student to succeed.

These opportunities include tailor-made instruction in the academic unit or courses and workshops offered at UF or elsewhere. Writing skills courses and screening tests are available through the Academic Written English Program in the English Language Institute.
